Philip has provided programme notes for concert promoters such as Wigmore Hall, the Three Choirs and Lichfield Festivals. His writing in this area ranges from notes on single works to complete festival programmes, providing notes for the works being performed as well as an introductory article drawing together threads across the entire programme.

His sleeve notes for CD recordings have - perhaps unusually - received notice from reviewers. In his work in this area, Philip has endeavoured to revitalise the sleeve note, bringing original research into a medium that can have a tendency to recycle previous writings.
