Philip is building a significant reputation for his ground-breaking original research. Drawing on extensive primary source materials he has challenged the received views of some areas of British music.

His research has lead to some major publications on W.Denis Browne and Ivor Gurney, as well as a number of smaller articles. Please see the Publications page for details.

Philip's main research interest is in English music and poetry around the time of the First World War. He has a great interest in song and chamber music of this period.
