BIOGRAPHY
Born in Yorkshire in 1977, Philip spent his formative years in Lichfield before leaving for the south west to study for a BA in Music at the University of Bristol. During his ten years in Bristol he worked in various capacities at the city's Cathedral whilst also building up a reputation as a freelance researcher, writer and lecturer, specialising in early 20th century British music. He now pursues this work on a full time basis, both as a freelancer and as a post-graduate research student.
Amongst other things Philip is currently working closely with the Ivor Gurney Estate in the preparation of a critical editions of songs and other works by Ivor Gurney. The early results of this editorial work have been performed, issued on CD and broadcast on Radio 3. Notable amongst these is Gurney's War Elegy for orchestra, co-edited with Ian Venables, which was recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and issued on the Dutton Epoch label in 2006. In 2008 Stainer & Bell are to publish his new edition of Gurney's 1919 song cycle for tenor, string quartet and piano, Ludlow and Teme, which has been recorded by both James Gilchrist (Linn Records) and Andrew Kennedy (Signum). Philip's ground-breaking catalogue of Gurney's musical works was published in December 2006.
As well as providing regular programme and CD sleeve notes, Philip has published several articles, including a major article exploring the initial findings of his research into the composer, pianist and critic, W. Denis Browne, a biography of whom is in progress.
In April 2007 Philip returned to Lichfield, taking up the post of Bass Lay Vicar Choral at the Cathedral, and is fortunate enough to be living in the Cathedral Close.
Having recently submitted for his Masters Degree at Bristol, in January 2008 Philip begins a full time PhD under the aegis of Exeter University.
Philip recently launched a new British arts publishing house: Chosen Press.
